The ancients loved the scent of sweet marjoram. They added it to bath water for its relaxing properties, and they massaged the oil into their
foreheads and hair. Marjoram was a popular stewing herb in the Middle Ages, and its antiseptic qualities were much used in times of plague. The herb was constantly in demand for making nosegays, sweet bags, pomanders, and perfumed washing water. The dried herb was put into bags and hung among linen and clothes to keep moths and other flying insects away. The fresh leaves and juice of marjoram were rubbed over furniture and floors to give an aromatic sheen, and the herb was also used to perfume soap.
