In Old England, a whitlow was an inflammation under or around the fingernails or toenails. The sharply acidic juices of the witlow grasses were said to be a remedy for the affliction, although it is unlikely they did much good. Like some others of the mustard family, these plants are known as winter annuals because they sprout in the fall, survive the winter, and begin to grow again in early spring.
