Unopened bottles of insulin should be stored in the refrigerator and
are good until the expiration date on the box and/or bottle. Bottles of insulin that you are using can be stored at room temperature (59-86 degrees Farenheit) for about 1 month (28 - 30 days). The strength of the insulin may be altered after that. Do not use insulin after it has been kept at room temperature for longer than a month. Insulin should never be frozen. Keep insulin bottle(s) away from direct sunlight or heat and in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing the bottles to temperature extremes (less than 36 degrees Farenheit or more than 86 degrees Farenheit). Has my insulin gone "bad"?
Don't use regular insulin or Humalog if it becomes cloudy in appearance and/or is expired. Don't use NPH or Lente insulin if it becomes clumped or crystallized, or if the bottle becomes frosted, or if it is expired. What if my insulin needs to be changed?
Changes in type and/or source of species may result in the need for
a change in dose. Any change of insulin should be made only under medical supervisio n. What about mixing insulins?
Humalog and any slow-acting insulin (NPH, Lente, Ultralente) - inject within 5 minutes of mixing. Regular and NPH - inject within 5 minutes of mixing. Regular and Lente - inject within 5 minutes of mixing. It is best not to mix and store for later use. Regular and Ultralente - mix and inject within 5 minutes or inject the Regular and Ultralente in two different injections. Be consistent with your choice. What about prefilling syringes?
Use of prefilled syringes varies, depending on the types of insulin
that are mixed. Ask you diabetes educator for guidelines. How do I dispose of syringes?
Throw out immediately after use into an opaque, puncture resistant,
(heavy duty) non-breakable container such as a detergent container
or coffee can. When the container is nearly full, it should be covered, taped and thrown out according to local and state medical waste rules. To decrease the chance of another person using your syringe after you dispose of it, separate the plunger from the barrel.
People say yoga is a mind-body connection. I say it's a pain-insanity connection.
