The following essential oils have been found to have moderate-to-high effectiveness in keeping various insects away from you:
To repel mosquitoes: Basil, Cedarwood, Citronella, Geranium, Juniper, & Rosemary.
To repel House flies: citronella, Geranium, and Juniper.
To repel Fleas: cajeput, Lemon, and Pine
To repel Ants: All Mints.
Essential oils useful as insect repellants are basil, cajeput, cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, geranium, juniper, lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, peppermint, pine, rosemary, and tea tree.
Herbs useful as insect repellants are garlic, lavender, lemongrass, all types of mint, pennyroyal, southernwood, wormwood, and tansy.
To make an insect repellant to apply to the skin, you can make the following tea spray or a vegetable oil-based aromatherapy blend. Or you can forgo the skin application completely, and put a few drops of essential oil on your clothes, sleeping bag, hat, and tent. It doesn’t have to be on your skin to keep the bugs away! Remember they have a very keen sense of smell.
